As a legendary songstress, Cher has accomplished a lot in her 79 years, including raising her two kids: Chaz Bono and Elijah Blue Allman.
“They are both very talented, both very artistic, and they are good children. They’re grown-ups. They’re so different,” she told Vanity Fair of her sons in 2010.
Cher has been candid about her difficult journey to motherhood, revealing on Twitter (now X) in 2022 that she suffered three miscarriages before welcoming her first child. On March 4, 1969, she welcomed her older son, Chaz, with then-husband Sonny Bono.
The couple, who together formed powerhouse pop duo Sonny & Cher, divorced in 1975. Bono died in a skiing accident in 1998. Cher was back on amicable terms with her ex-husband at the time of his passing, and dedicated her 1998 album Believe to him, per People.

Shortly after her divorce was finalized, Cher wed Gregg Allman of The Allman Brothers Band. She filed for divorce from Allman a little over a week later, but the couple reconciled, and remained married until 1979, per People. They welcomed their only child, son Elijah Blue, on July 10, 1976.
“Chaz had a dad for a long time. Sonny was a great parent for a young child—even like 12, 13. But the moment you had ideas that were contrary, he was not quite as interested,” she said in her 2010 Vanity Fair feature. “Elijah didn’t really have Gregory. Gregory moved off someplace else. He was the nicest person, even when he was doing drugs,” she added.
Cher made it clear she wouldn’t change a thing about her role as a mom. “My life would have been nothing without them,” she said of her kids in a Dr. Phil appearance, per People.

Cher welcomed her first child, Chaz Bono, on March 4, 1969, with then-husband Sonny Bono.
Chaz made his television debut in 1973, appearing on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. He also appeared in a few episodes of The Sonny and Cher Show between 1976 and 1977, according to his IMDB profile.
As a teenager, Chaz attended performing arts school LaGuardia in New York City. There, he became friends with fellow student Jennifer Aniston. The Friends star reminisced on their school days during a 2023 appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “Well I went to high school with Chaz and amongst our group of, our gaggle, we would always go to [his] house because it was nice. It was Cher.”
“It was just wild and wonderful cause we didn’t really know Cher,” she continued. “We were little kids in high school, though I guess you understand a little bit at that point. It was just fun to be able to hang out with Cher.”
While Chaz was interested in acting from a young age, he struggled to feel comfortable in the roles he was cast in. “I couldn’t really do a good job playing female characters, and I didn’t know why,” he told People in a 2013 interview.
Chaz, who came out as a transgender man in 2009, per People, eventually found his footing. Today, he’s a successful actor whose resume includes appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm, American Horror Story, and The Bold and the Beautiful, per IMDB. He also appeared alongside his mother and grandmother in a 2011 documentary about his transition, titled Becoming Chaz. The same year, he became the first transgender contestant to compete on Dancing With the Stars.
“Chaz is so happy, so unbelievably happy, and I don’t know what the people’s problems are,” Cher said in a 2020 interview with CNN. “They’re fearful, and they just don’t understand how to react to it.”

The mom and son have stepped out together several times in recent years. In October 2024, Cher took to the red carpet with Chaz for the Beyond Fest premiere of horror film Little Bites, which he appeared in. She also co-produced the film with her son.
Outside of acting, Chaz is also an activist and author of several books, including 2003 memoir The End of Innocence.

Cher welcomed her second child, Elijah Blue Allman, on July 10, 1976. She shared him with her ex-husband, Gregg Allman, who died of liver cancer in 2017, per The New York Times. The singer and musician split in 1979.
“You know, I loved [Allman], but I didn’t really want Elijah around him alone. It’s hard finding a drug addict who is also going to be a father,” she shared with Vanity Fair in 2010.
Alongside his older half-brother, Elijah hit the road for his mother’s performances from a young age. “When they were young, I could just drag them with me,” she said in a 2004 episode of Dr. Phil, per HuffPost. “So we would go all over and they liked it, I mean, it was their life, they didn’t know that it wasn’t fun. And for them, it was.

“There were around a whole bunch of people who loved them to death, dancers and singers who would take them everywhere so that they had a good time,” she added. “But then there were times after that, it’s just not that much fun.”
Elijah found himself drawn to music, just like his parents before him. According to a 2010 HuffPost interview, his first guitar was a gift from legendary rocker Gene Simmons. From 1995 to today—with a 10 year break in the middle—the 49-year-old has served as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for industrial rock band Deadsy. He’s also contributed lead vocals to tracks for Sugar Ray, Korn, and other groups.
Elijah married singer Marieangela “Angie” King in 2013. He filed for divorce in 2021, but had it dismissed in 2024, per People. King filed for divorce from Elijah in April 2025, according to People.
