- V-tip have a triangular shape, unlike French nails that follow the nail’s natural smile line.
- Try this look when you’re craving the simplicity of a French mani but with a but more edge.
If you love a French manicure but are looking for something just outside the box, consider V-tip nails. It’s a simple twist on the classic ‘90s mani where the tip of the nail is shaped into a “V” instead of a curved crescent moon. “The V-tip gives [the French mani] an edgier vibe,” says celebrity nail artist Queenie Nguyen.
Plus, V-tip nails are a lot easier to DIY than their curvy predecessor. To achieve the look at home, all you need is your color(s) of choice and a flat brush, says nail artist Hang Nguyen. First, you’ll take the polish and use the brush from the bottle to slowly paint on a diagonal line on the nail. Starting at the middle part at the top of the nail, draw that line diagonally toward the center of the outer edge. Repeat on the other side to get that V-shape. Clean it up with a flat brush dipped in polish remover.
For a more structured approach, Hang says you can use a foundation sponge or silicone stamper to stamp on both sides to get your V-shape. Alternatively, you can use a stencil to trace out the perfect lines to get your V-tip, adds Queenie.
No matter your approach, you can play with nail shape and length, as well as nail polish colors, finishes, and designs for a completely customized mani. Keep scrolling for 15 V-tip nail looks to add to your beauty mood boards.

Tonal Colors
Hang likes pairing different shades from the same color family together to get that “V” shape. One of her favorite looks is this one she’s done herself that features one side light brown and the other side a darker brown for a minimal nail look.
Butter Yellow
Look no further for proof that butter yellow is in. Combined with a V-tip and negative space, these nails show how to flawlessly pull off a trend sans effort.
Bright Pastel
Opt for pastel shades for your V-tips. Mix a combo of baby blue, yellow, and pink for a fun and flirty mani.
Heart Tips
A V-tip doesn’t have to be drawn with straight lines. Opt for rounded edges, like these heart-like tips. They’re perfect for Valentine’s Day or whenever you’re looking to spread the love.
Metallic Shine
Queenie also likes metallic shades when doing a V-tip nail. This metallic black with a nude base is topped off with a slight shimmer and adorned with a jeweled detail.
V-Swirls
Another iteration of rounded edges, these swirls make for a fun spin on the V-tip trend. Mix different colors together to make them more dynamic. And don’t forget to finish with a top coat for that high-gloss shine and added protection.

Black and White Affair
A black and white combo makes for an elegant and chic mani that you can wear for all occasions. This one has a matte finish and minimal geometric shapes drawn to give the tuxedo nails a little something extra.
Chrome Cat Eye
Cat eye pink gives these nails their luxurious velvet texture. And the contrasting silver chrome V-tips lend a nice metal accent. The result is equal parts pretty and fierce.
Color Blocking
Another favorite V-tip of Queenie’s is color blocking. Pair contrasting hues together, like this vibrant purple as the base and a classic glossy black for the tip. It gives off Disney villain vibes—but in the best way possible.
