Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera is set to unveil the lineup for the event’s upcoming 82nd edition, which is expected to be packed with buzzy awards hopefuls.
Last year’s Venice Silver Lion winner, “The Brutalist” by Brady Corbet, scored three Oscars while Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here,” which had scooped Venice’s best screenplay prize, won for best international feature film.
“La Grazia,” a love story that re-teams Oscar-winning Italian director Paolo Sorrentino with “The Great Beauty” actor Toni Servillo, has been set as the festival’s previously announced opening film and will also compete for the fest’s top prize the Golden Lion.
Expanding specialty streamer and distributor Mubi will be flying its flag, having acquired “La Grazia” ahead of its launch. Mubi boss Efe Cakarel asserted last month that another high-profile title he acquired, Jim Jarmusch’s triptych picture “Father Mother Sister Brother,” starring Cate Blanchett had Adam Driver, had also landed a Lido competition slot.
This year’s Golden Lion career achievement honorees are iconoclastic German director Werner Herzog — whose body of work comprises “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo” and Nosferatu the Vampyre” — and legendary “Vertigo” star Kim Novak.
Two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne will preside over the main jury. Oscar-nominated Brazilian actress and writer Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”), prominent Iranian auteur Mohammad Rasoulof (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”), Palme d’Or-winning Romanian director-writer-producer Cristian Mungiu (“4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”), French director Stéphane Brizé (“Out of Season”), Italian director Maura Delpero (“Vermiglio”) and Chinese actor and producer Zhao Tao (“Caught by the Tides”) will be joining Payne as competition jurors.
The 82nd edition of Venice will run Aug. 27-Sept. 6.
