Long hair and Emily Ratajkowski go hand in hand, so when the actress graced our screens with a cropped cut on Netflix’s new show, Too Much, it had the world slack jawed. The actress looked almost unrecognizable sporting a very chic (and very trendy) French bob, which highlighted her cheekbones and jawline in the best ways.
“Emily’s French bob is soft and textured with a cool, undone finish,” says Nick Arrojo, master stylist and founder of Arrojo NYC Salon. “It’s cut just at the cheekbones and paired with a gorgeous, face-framing fringe that gives it a laid-back Parisian feel.”
Arrojo adds that he loves that the look has a sort of carefree, non-fussy essence about it (very Parisian, TBH), that gives “girl about town” energy while still looking polished. This new hairstyle is most likely a wig, which would make sense since this is a character-driven TV role, but wig or not, we’re low key obsessed.
The Bob Renaissance
You might have noticed that bobs are basically everywhere right now. They feel super fresh for summer and help keep the hair off your neck, but the short hairstyles are likely here to stay even through the upcoming chilly months.
“Bobs are back because they’re bold, versatile, and surprisingly low-maintenance. A well-cut bob makes a statement. It’s confident, stylish, and easy to wear,” Arrojo tells us. He adds, “People want strong shape and simplicity, and the bob delivers both. I’m also seeing more people gravitate toward A-line bobs in particular. Because they’re longer in the front, they’re easier to grow out and less of a commitment.”
How to Get the Look
Whether a wig or real deal, Arrojo says Ratajkowski’s cropped French bob is a super wearable look in real life that can be tailored to suit most people’s texture and face shape with the right tweaks. To get the look, show a picture to your stylist (visuals help a ton) and then discuss how to personalize the look to flatter your own features.
“This cut suits finer to medium textures and face shapes with more balance, [and] oval or heart-shaped faces work really well,” Arrojo says. “It’s definitely not ideal for rounder faces, especially the bangs. That strong, short fringe can exaggerate the roundness, so I’d recommend skipping the bangs and going for a slightly longer shape if you’re in that category.”
As for upkeep, Arrojo says to plan for a trip to the salon every four to six weeks for a quick cleanup and trim. This is more frequent than you’d need with longer styles, but this shorter cut requires a bit more maintenance to keep the shape and keep the fringe in check.
For styling, use a smoothing iron to get that sleek French finish. A small to medium-sized curling iron can help add some texture if your hair is on the straighter side. (Make sure to apply a heat protectant first, and a blowout cream when blow drying from wet.)
If you’re after something more lived-in, like Ratajkowski has on the show, apply a texturizing product that enhances your natural curl (like ARROJO’s Wave Mist) to damp hair and let it air dry.
