An NFL staff member is in the hospital after being seriously injured in a shooting incident in New York City that has already taken the lives of at least five people.
On Monday, July 28, a gunman — who has since been identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas — opened fire at 345 Park Ave. in New York City. The building hosts several companies, including Blackstone Inc., financial advisory firm KPMG and the National Football League (NFL)’s headquarters.
NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, distributed a memo to staff following the incident that revealed a member of their staff was injured in the “unspeakable act of violence” that took place at the office block.
“One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack,” Goodell wrote in the memo, obtained by CNN. “He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.”

Goodell confirmed that all other employees working at 345 Park Ave. have been accounted for and are safe following the incident, per CNN.
“We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,” Goodell’s memo continued, before urging NFL staff to stay up to date with details.
He added that “significant resources” are being provided for those who have been affected.
“Those based in New York should work remotely tomorrow,” Goodell said. “It is understandable if you prefer to take the day off. There will be an increased security presence at 345 Park Avenue in the days and weeks to come.”
“Every one of you is a valued member of the NFL family,” he concluded. “We will get through this together.”

At around 6.30 p.m. local time on Monday, police had warned pedestrians in the area that there was an active shooter, BBC News reported. People inside the building hid in offices and even attempted to block doors with chairs amid the gunfire.
Tamura allegedly shot multiple people in the lobby before making his way to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot one person before allegedly turning the gun on himself. N.Y.C. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said Tamura walked down a hallway and shot himself in the chest.
