A child was critically injured after a portion of asphalt fell from a moving vehicle and crashed through the windshield of an SUV he was riding in, Las Vegas police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Monday, July 28, in Spring Valley, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.
A “large portion of asphalt” became “dislodged” from a vehicle driving on South Durango Drive and entered the northbound lanes, hitting the child, a 6-year-old boy, who was inside a 2017 Honda Pilot, police said. The vehicle was driven by a 34-year-old woman.
The boy was sitting in the back seat, per KLAS. Another passenger, a 4-year-old boy, was uninjured.
Police identified the driver as Makayla Engstrum, who was uninjured and remained at the scene. She was not impaired at the time of the accident.
Police said the 6-year-old was taken to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada with critical injuries after emergency responders arrived.
