On July 29, 1981, Princess Diana, then a young aristocrat, married the then Prince Charles at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The event, watched around the world, was dubbed the “wedding of the century” at the time. Forty-four years after this memorable date, Diana’s younger brother Charles Spencer, nostalgic for yesteryear, shared an unpublished photo of his sister on Instagram. The black-and-white snapshot takes us back in time to Princess Diana’s childhood. Dressed in what appears to be a swim cap and swimsuit, the young girl poses shyly alongside her little brother.

“A long ago summer, by the swimming pool at our childhood home, Park House, Sandringham – Diana and I both proudly showing off our swimming badges (sewn onto our swimming costumes),” Spencer captioned the image. “These were awarded (sparingly) by Mrs Lansdowne, a fairly terrifying but very gifted swimming instructor, who came to stay each year. We were never out of that pool.”
This isn’t the first time the 9th Earl Spencer has shared rare photos of Princess Diana. Earlier this month, on July 1, while Meghan Markle launched her rosé or Prince William was fighting homelessness, Diana’s brother shared a previously unpublished photo to mark what would have been the princess’s 64th birthday. The snapshot, posted to Instagram, depicted young Diana on her sixth birthday, sitting on Bert, a camel at Thorney Wildlife Park zoo in Peterborough, north London.
On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a car accident under the Pont de l’Alma in Paris. Her sudden death that took the whole world by surprise. These few moments of sharing with us, offered by her younger brother, are a noble way of honoring his sister’s memory.
