The ballerina sneaker trend is just the latest in a stretch of kooky shoe creations (who can forget the launch of Sneex?). But while many are just a flash in the pan, the fervor for these unusual flats-meet-trainers remains at a high. It combines the durability and support of comfy walking sneakers with the sleek, soft design elements of ballet flats.
While the uniquely Frankenstein-ed style has existed quietly within the trend cycle since 2021 thanks to British label Simone Rocha, over the last year or so its popularity has exploded. In response athleisure juggernauts have adapted already popular slim sneaker silhouettes to match the trend, including the launch of Bad Bunny’s instant-sellout ballerina sneaker collab with Adidas. Designer labels are also finding their own way to get in, with Miu Miu’s slip-on gymnasium sneakers and the April launch of Louis Vuitton’s LV Sneakerina.
Glamour’s ballet sneaker wish list
Over summer, the ballet sneaker’s slim silhouette was a one-to-one swap for ballet flats, versatile enough to wear with everything from romantic dresses or light linen pants to big baggy jeans (but with a welcome addition of rubber soles to handle long days on your feet on vacation). As things start to cool off, you can find plenty of fresh ways to style them. For a sportier look, take a page out of Dua Lipa’s book and lean into the balletcore movement by wearing them with white or gray leggings. For the office, try them with trousers and a button-down. The updated ballet flat
This season’s standout ballerina sneakers take details we love from classic silhouettes such as the Puma Speedcat and the Adidas Taekwondo and update them in ways that fit the textural vibe of fall. Look for unusual details like laces that wrap around the ankle or the sporty contrast of suede and technical fabrics.
The slim sneaker
Loewe’s Ballet Runner was first introduced in 2019 and has remained a bestseller for the brand ever since. But over the last few years, a host of slim lace-up sneakers have appeared, drawing inspiration from ballet flats via details like a rounded toe box, silky laces, and a thin sole. Sneaker queen Bella Hadid recently stepped out in a pair by Vivaia, while Simone Rocha, a brand known for its romantic details, is another champion of the modern sneakerina, complete with a satin upper and bold bows.
The Mary Jane
The latest evolution is the arrival of a new host of sneaker-flat hybrids inspired by the Mary Jane silhouette, complete with a buckle strap over the top of the foot. Jennifer Lawrence was most recently spotted in the mostly sold-out Wales Bonner Mary Jane sneakers. While there are iconic heritage takes on the trend such as Nike’s Air Rift, the new iterations by brands like JW Pei and Salomon are carrying the torch in a way that feels fresh.
