As KPop Demon Hunters continues to dominate streaming charts, Netflix’s Sony Pictures-produced hit will also make its theatrical debut this weekend with singalong screenings at screens around the world. Ahead of the animated film’s movie theater takeover, retailers including Hot Topic and Amazon (and even the film’s own stars) are cashing in with new official merch for Huntrix and Saja Boys superfans.
The surprise chart-topper chronicles the adventures of Huntrix, a K-pop girl group comprised of three members who just happen to also fight monsters from the underworld. Netflix says the animated feature is now its second most popular English-language film. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack and its breakout hit, “Golden,” have also taken the top spots on Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify U.S. 50, putting the voices behind Huntrix (sung by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami) and Saja Boys (sung by Andrew Choi, Neckwav, Kevin Woo, Samuil Lee and Danny Chung) and the soundtrack’s songwriters on the charts.
Netflix was quick to stock straight-from-the-screen merch at its online store with Rumi’s PJs (choo! choo!), Mira’s polar bear sweatshirt, Zoey’s tropical bomber jacket, Baby Saja’s pink argyle sweater and more movie-inspired apparel alongside Derpy Tiger plushes, stickers, posters, phone cases and more goods. The streamer also teamed with Samsung to offer exclusive KPop Demon Hunters themes for free at the Galaxy Store. Beyond Netflix, fans can shop official vinyl, T-shirts, hoodies and jewelry alongside unofficial fan-made light sticks at Hot Topic, Amazon, Etsy and other online stores.
It’s not the first time music-powered movies have released official products for faux bands – or even inspired fans to create their own goods. For Pixar’s Oscar-nominated animated film Turning Red, Disney sold concert T-shirts for the fictional (and Grammy-nominated) boy band 4*Town, whose songs were written by Billie Eilish and Finneas. The group was even brought to life onstage at the 2022 Unforgettable Gala when they performed “1 True Love” and “Nobody Like You” to a crowd that included Turning Red voice stars Sandra Oh and Rosalie Chang, Simu Liu and others.
About 949 million minutes of KPop Demon Hunters (which runs one hour and 39 minutes) have been streamed on Netflix, making it the most-streamed film on the platform and overall as of press time since its June 20 release.
