A bride is contemplating whether she’s “overreacting” to an unwanted surprise that took place at her wedding over the weekend.
In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, the bride, 32, shared that during her bouquet toss, one of the groomsman’s girlfriends jumped up and caught the bouquet, which was “fine” until what happened next.
“[She] immediately pulled out a ring and proposed to him,” the bride remembered. “Everyone gasped, and instead of cheering for us, the crowd swarmed them. People were recording, congratulating, the whole nine yards. It completely derailed the moment.”

Although catching the bridal bouquet traditionally symbolizes that the person who catches it will be the next one to marry, a marriage proposal usually doesn’t happen instantly.
Not only did the newlyweds’ friends and family turn their congratulations away from them and toward the newly engaged couple, but their vendors also had their heads turned.
“Even our photographer and videographer missed half of what was supposed to be our photos and videos because they pivoted to the spectacle,” the bride wrote.
It’s been a few days since the bride tied the knot, but she still can’t get over the attention being stolen from her on what was supposed to be a day focused on her and her husband.
“My husband says we should just let it go because ‘it’s done and over,’ but honestly I feel robbed of one of my special moments,” the bride admitted.
Reddit users were sympathetic toward the bride in the comments section, with most agreeing she wasn’t “overreacting.” They argued that it was “tacky” and “selfish” for the groomsman’s now-fiancée to propose at the wedding without the bride and groom’s consent beforehand.

A handful of Redditors agreed with the groom’s perspective.
“[Don’t] continue to waste energy and continue to hold on to this, otherwise it will further impact OP’s (original poster) mental health. Unfortunately, they can’t turn back time and change the day,” an individual wrote in part.

There were also mixed comments about the photographer and videographer’s reactions to the engagement. Some commenters told the bride not to “blame” or “punish” the workers for wanting to capture the proposal, and said they likely “assumed” the couple were aware of the surprise. Other commenters felt as though the bride and groom should be granted a partial refund from the photographer and videographer for diverting their attention.
“If I saw that at a wedding I would only assume that it was preplanned bc [because] no one would be a big enough loser to actually do that at someone’s wedding,” one Redditor said.
Someone else with a different perspective wrote: “I would certainly be deducting a portion of the photographer’s and videographer’s fees for not focusing on the job they were paid to do.”
