Welcome to The Blueprint, where we break down the celebrity looks we want to wear right now and build them back up, piece by piece.
Jessica Alba is always a few steps ahead of me.
And in this case, the “steps” are the outfit basics that she wore on August 20, which I was planning to break out in the coming weeks: a sturdy denim jacket, which Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox also wore this season, as well as a comfortable pants alternative to jeans and leggings.
She went a step further and accessorized with a $310 pair of shoes from Margaux — one of the most comfortable flats brands we tried — plus a hands-free purse, which would allow me to carry a cozy chai latte without the fear of spilling on my pre-Labor Day white pants.

I thought I was over denim jackets, but I have a renewed appreciation for them thanks to Alba. They make any outfit — whether flashy ones à la Martha Stewart or feminine dresses — more functional and grounded. And these days, I want clothing that serves me, rather than being strictly “cute.”
This $45 style has a deep blue wash that could go with lighter or darker jeans, plus it’s oversized enough to even layer over sweaters. It’s also under $50, which is more affordable compared to other styles of a similar nature.

While I only have a short window of time to wear heavier denim jackets in Arizona, I can pretty much wear pants like Alba’s year-round. This pair is made with linen, a breathable fabric I still swear by during these over 80-degree days. (Though I found two other options below that are better for colder climates!)
The wide-leg silhouette looks as roomy as a pair of pajama pants. And, according to one shopper, the pants are also “perfect for travel because they can be dressed down or up and don’t take [up] much space in the luggage.”

If you can’t swing Alba’s Margaux shoes right now, this Madewell pair is an equally stylish substitution thanks to their woven construction and sleek square-toe shape. What’s more, the fall-ready chocolate color is doubly discounted thanks to the brand’s Labor Day Event and would look adorably preppy with a pair of crew socks sticking out of them.

Crossbody bags have won both Alba and me over again and again, so I’m never mad about adding another to my wardrobe — they make traveling, errands, and pretty much anything that requires your hands infinitely easier. This one also has a long and short strap, so you can wear it hands-free, and it looks soft and pliable like high-quality, expensive leather.
