Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are one of the ’90s’ greatest love stories.
In 2000, the I Know What You Did Last Summer costars accidentally went on a first date after another friend canceled on dinner plans last minute. The chemistry was instant, and by 2002, they had tied the knot at the El Careyes resort in Mexico.
Today, the couple shares two children: daughter Charlotte, born in 2010, and son Rocky, born in 2012. They’re still as outwardly affectionate to each other as they were back in the day, too. Gellar frequently posts pictures of the pair on Instagram, and in September 2024, they celebrated their 22nd anniversary with a cheery photo.
As the happy couple celebrates 23 years of marriage, see their cutest photos through the years.
Ready for His Close-Up
In Hollywood, a relationship that spans two decades is pretty much unheard of, but Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have defied the odds.
The It-Couple
The couple met while filming the 1997 scary movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer, but wouldn’t start dating until 2000.
Red Carpet Ready
In fact, Sarah Michelle Gellar told PEOPLE in 2002, “We had made plans for dinner with a mutual friend and the person canceled. We decided to have dinner anyway and never looked back.”
Mid-Kiss
They’ve never been afraid to show a little PDA. Here, the pair share some champagne and a smooch at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards.

Blonde Era
They’ve stuck together through thick and thin … and that time Prinze Jr. bleached his hair.
A Foxy Pair
Feeling foxy? In 2002, the pair visited with Arctic foxes in San Diego, California. Couples who wear matching red hoodies together, stay together, apparently!
2000s Icons
The pair have acted together since being on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. They even starred as famous cartoon couple, Fred and Daphne, in the live-action Scooby-Doo in 2002.

And for Halloween 2022, the couple pulled a page from another ’90s favorite: The Mask of Zorro. “As you wish” Gellar captioned the fun pic.
