Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and onetime lawyer for Donald Trump, was injured in a car crash in New Hampshire on Saturday and was taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” according to a statement from officials.
The crash, which took place just before 10 p.m. on Saturday night, left three people injured. Troopers were investigating a domestic violence incident on the interstate shortly before a two-vehicle crash occurred and responded to the crash, police said.
A vehicle driven by a 19-year-old woman struck the back of the car in which Giuliani was a passenger. Giuliani, the person who was driving the car he was in, and the woman who was driving the vehicle who struck them, were all hospitalized, per police.
Giuiiani’s head of security, Michael Ragusa, said in an official statement on social media: “Giuliani’s vehicle was struck from behind at high speed. He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg.”
Ragusa said the crash took place shortly after Giuliani had assisted a domestic violence victim who had flagged him down for assistance. Ragusa later added in the comment thread to the statement that he believed the two incidents to be “random and unrelated.” He also said that the incident was “not a targeted attack.”
“We ask everyone to respect Mayor Giuliani’s privacy and recovery, and refrain from spreading unfounded conspiracy theories,” he wrote.
In a caption to the statement, Ragusa said Giuliani “sustained injuries but is in good spirits and recovering tremendously.”
In a social media post on Sunday, Giuliani thanked business partner Maria Ryan for overseeing his care; Ryan is a nurse practitioner.
The crash remains under investigation, police said, and no charges have been filed.
Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 through 2001 and later worked as Trump’s lawyer and a confidant who staunchly defended Trump’s push to overturn the 2020 election results. Giuliani has been embroiled in numerous legal tangles, including those stemming from his alleged involvement in 2020 election interference.
In January, Giuliani was held in contempt of court after he failed to turn over $11 million in personal assets in a defamation suit brought by two Georgia election workers. In December 2023, he was ordered to pay $148 million to the Georgia poll workers who sued him after he falsely accused them of participating in rigging the 2020 presidential election against Trump.
