School officials in Pennsylvania have identified a teenager who was killed by a deer that crashed through the front of a car he was riding in this week.
A Malvern Preparatory School official identified the high schooler as Kevin Donohue in a statement shared with ABC affiliate WPVI, adding that Donohue was on his way to the campus when the incident took place.
“Kevin was an exceptional young man who embodied the very best characteristics of a Malvern Prep student,” a school official wrote, per the outlet. “He will be deeply missed.”
The incident occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 2, Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
According to the police investigation, a car was driving east when it hit a deer that entered the road, causing the animal to be thrown into the westbound lane, where it crashed into the windshield of the vehicle in which Donohue was riding, although they identified him only as a juvenile in the statement. He’d been sitting in the front passenger seat and was transported to a hospital.
“The juvenile succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” police said, noting they are still trying to identify the driver of the car that first struck the deer.
The vehicle is believed to be a black Toyota Sienna with heavy front-end damage, police said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
“This loss is a profound tragedy that has impacted our students, faculty, staff, and community,” a school official said, according to WPVI. “Our immediate focus is on surrounding his family with compassion and ensuring that our students, faculty, and staff are supported as we grieve together.”

A spokesperson for Malvern Preparatory School could not immediately be reached by PEOPLE to provide additional details, but a local athletics page notes Donohue was an avid lacrosse player who was set to graduate from high school in 2027.
“I could only imagine what the family is going through, having lost a young son,” Jason Lazurick, who lives close to the Donohue family, told WPVI.
