Mitski has announced a new concert film, “The Land,” which will receive a limited theatrical release starting Oct. 22.
Courtesy of Trafalgar Releasing, the movie will be screened in 630 cinemas across 30 countries. It was filmed over three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre during the indie rocker’s 2024 tour in support of her album “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.”
Tickets to the film will be available for purchase starting Sept. 15.
“Mitski is a visionary artist and a compelling performer and her first concert film is just as special — it’s a privilege to bring this film to cinemas and Mitski fans around the world,” said Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing.
The concert film captures Mitski alongside a seven-piece band, bobbing in and out of a beaming spotlight and dark shadows. The stage design, by Andi Watson, “evokes the album’s themes of isolation, longing, and the wild beauty of human connection, with visual elements that shift from a striking minimalism to a lush, dreamlike tableau,” according to a press release. The show was choreographed by Monica Mirabile, and the setlist included songs from “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We,” as well as reworkings of songs across her discography.
“Mitski: The Land” is directed by Grant James, who has helmed music videos and concert films for artists such as Father John Misty and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Mitski’s long-standing producer Patrick Hyland mixed the film. It’s produced by Moniker Films and Good Harbor Music in association with Working Class Films and Dead Oceans.
