On June 22, Alex and Jon announced that they were expecting a baby together. Their happy news came almost exactly a year after the couple shared that they’d heartbreakingly lost their first baby together at 26 weeks.
This past July, the two spoke with PEOPLE and opened up about what it was like hearing that they were pregnant again after experiencing a loss like that.
“I was by myself and the thought of getting pregnant again was actually really scary to me,” Alex, 32, told PEOPLE. “After you’ve experienced loss, the second time you see a positive pregnancy test, you are kind of struck with a wave of fear and unknown because it didn’t work out the first time. So why would I think that it’s going to work out this time?”
“Thinking about seeing a positive pregnancy test, I think I was really nervous,” she admitted. “And then when I saw that it was positive, it was a completely different experience from the first time I saw a positive pregnancy test.”
At the time, Alex said that the couple was “holding our breath” regardless of healthy scans and positive doctor appointments. “I don’t think we’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief until we actually have a baby in our [arms],” explained Alex.
“We can feel two things at once, though. We are so excited, but we’re also very cautiously optimistic,” added Jon.
PEOPLE again spoke with Alex just before she welcomed her baby, at the end of August. At the time, she said that she and her husband “waited until the last minute to do anything” — including prepping their hospital bag and setting up their nursery — “because of nerves.”
“We’re currently in crunch time right now,” Madison told PEOPLE. “We’re very go-with-the-flow.”
“I think this might just have to do with the mentality after loss,” continued the content creator. “I’m like, all of this stuff doesn’t matter. As long as she just arrives safely and we both are alive, that’s the end goal, and everything else we will just figure out as we go.”
