The Superman superhero pic from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Warner Bros.-owned DC Studios will fly onto HBO Max on Sept. 19.
The streaming debut for the Gunn-directed tentpole will be followed by a debut on HBO linear on Sept. 20. Superman, which had a production budget of around $225 million before marketing, is Safran and Gunn’s inaugural release as they breathe new life into the DC brand for Warner Bros. Discovery.
The streaming debut was preceded by Superman earning around $615 in global box office this summer. The tentpole is the first DC release to achieve the $600 million milestone since The Batman in 2022.
Gunn’s comic book adventure stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as criminal mastermind Lex Luthor. Rounding out the cast are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.
Gunn’s movie has been embraced by critics and audiences alike, in addition to besting rival Marvel Studios, which has seen all three of its three 2025 titles — The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World — struggle.
The movie marks the first DC film entry for Gunn since he took over the reins of Warner Bros’ superhero label with producer Safran in October 2022. Other upcoming DC Studios projects include HBO’s Green Lantern series Lanterns and a Supergirl movie, due out in 2026.
