While this may surprise some Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift fans, the British “Photograph” singer learned about Swift’s engagement the same way the rest of the world did.
During a September 24 appearance on SiriusXM’s Small Stage series with host Andy Cohen, Sheeran admitted he found out about his friend Taylor Swift and her fiancé Travis Kelce’s engagement through Instagram.
“Instagram? Like everyone else. You didn’t even get a DM in advance?” host Cohen asked. “No,” Sheeran replied.
Cohen then pressed the 34-year-old further: “Have you heard Taylor’s new album?” “No,” said Sheeran. “Did you get a save-the-date for the wedding?” “No,” he replied again.
While the red-headed singer hasn’t necessarily received an invitation yet, it’s likely he will, given the long-standing friendship between the two. Swift and Sheeran first became close in 2012, after he learned that she had penned his lyrics to his song “Lego House” on her arm during an Australian show, something Swift used to do during the early years of her career.
During Taylor’s Red era, the friends collaborated on the duet “Everything Has Changed” from her 2012 album Red. Sheeran even joined Swift on her Red tour in 2012 and 2013. They collaborated again on “End Game” from her sixth album, Reputation.
On Red (Taylor’s Version), released November 12, 2021, Swift and Sheeran reunited once again to rerecord “Everything Has Changed.” They also released another previously written song from 2012 called “Run.”
In a recent interview on “Call Her Daddy” Sheeran opened up about how the two maintained their friendship. “I probably see her like four times a year and we do what I said, like instead of catching up the whole time, we have a proper sit-down, six-hour catchups and I think that’s a really nice way to do it,” he said.
In another interview in May 2023, Sheeran told Zane Lowe that he is able to have “long” conversations with Swift because “she’s one of the only people that actually truly understands where I’m at.”
“I mean that in itself is kind of therapy as well, because you’re actually talking to someone that genuinely gets it,” said Sheeran.
“That has all the things that you feel and have insecurities about and how other people treat you or how your family treat you, how your friends treat you. She’s basically in the same sphere,” he continued.
