Fans of The Social Network have been waiting for a follow-up for over a decade—and the wait is officially over. Sony Pictures has greenlit the highly anticipated sequel, now titled The Social Reckoning, and details about the cast, plot, and release date are finally here.
Who’s In the Cast?
Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg, who famously portrayed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the 2010 hit, will not be returning for the sequel. Instead, Jeremy Strong—also an Oscar nominee—will take on a leading role alongside a fresh and exciting ensemble cast.
Joining Strong are Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and comedian Bill Burr. The original film’s cast—Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Andrew Garfield and Armie Hammer—launched major careers and earned eight Oscar nominations, winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and Original Score for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
In February 2025, Eisenberg told the BBC News he no longer wanted to think of himself “as someone associated” with someone like Zuckerberg.
“It’s like this guy is… doing things that are problematic, taking away fact-checking,” Eisenberg told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “[There are] safety concerns. Making people who are already threatened in the world more threatened.”
What’s the Plot?
Aaron Sorkin returns to write and direct the sequel. The Social Reckoning will serve as a “companion piece” to the original, exploring events nearly two decades after Zuckerberg and his team built Facebook.
The story centers on Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, who teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose the platform’s most closely guarded secrets. Their investigation led to the explosive “Facebook Files” in 2021, which revealed the social network’s known harmful effects on teens and the spread of misinformation that fueled political violence.
Variety reports that the film will highlight the high-stakes nature of whistleblowing, balancing personal drama with the broader consequences of tech giants’ decisions.
When’s the Release Date?
Fans won’t have to wait much longer: Sony Pictures has set the theatrical release for October 9, 2026.
