Taylor Swift may have secretly nodded to one of the popular romantasy books — and her fans are convinced they’ve cracked the code. While the singer hasn’t confirmed it herself, Swifties believe her new track “Opalite” contains some very specific references to Fourth Wing, Rebecca Yarros’ blockbuster novel.
The speculation started shortly after the song dropped, with fans zeroing in on a few key lyrics from the chorus:
“You were dancing through the lightning strikes / Sleepless in the onyx night / But now the sky is opalite.”
Why Fans Think ‘Opalite’ References ‘Fourth Wing’
The phrase “lightning strikes” instantly stood out to readers because Violet Sorrengail, the book’s heroine, develops the rare ability to wield lightning thanks to her dragon Tairn. Meanwhile, “onyx night” is believed to point to Xaden Riorson, the brooding love interest whose dragon Sgaeyl grants him shadow powers. The use of the word “onyx” — a gemstone associated with darkness — fits perfectly with his character.
Finally, “opalite” itself has become the centerpiece of the theory. The man-made gemstone is known for its soft, iridescent glow, and fans think Swift used it to symbolize the hopeful turn in Violet and Xaden’s relationship after surviving dark times together.
Adding even more fuel to the theory is the fact that author Rebecca Yarros is a self-proclaimed Swiftie. She’s previously shared that she wrote parts of her hit series while listening to Taylor’s music, making the idea of a subtle lyrical nod feel entirely possible.
Alternative Theories About ‘Opalite’
Of course, Swift hasn’t confirmed any of this. As of early October 2025, she’s explained that her new album The Life of a Showgirl is largely inspired by her time on tour and her relationship with fiancé Travis Kelce.
Some fans believe “Opalite” actually symbolizes Swift’s own love story. Kelce’s birthstone is opal, and the song explores finding joy after past heartbreak — “creating one’s own happiness,” as Swift has explained. Another camp believes certain verses in the song are subtle references to Kelce’s ex-girlfriend.
Taylor on Her Album and Kelce’s Proposal
Regardless of the meaning, Swift has been clear that this album reflects her real life. “With this [album], the coolest part is it’s absolutely the same place that I am in my life. The music matches the moment that I’m in,” she told Hits Radio. “This album is a complete and total snapshot of what my life looks like right now.”
She’s also shared a sweet glimpse into her engagement during a teaser for her Graham Norton Show appearance. “While we were talking on his podcast, he had a complete garden built out the back of his house to propose in,” she said. “He went all out — 10 out of 10.”
