It: Welcome to Derry debuted on HBO Max last night (October 26), and fans are already loving the series.
Set in the world of Stephen King’s It universe, It: Welcome to Derry is based on King’s “IT” novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It Chapter Two.
However, while watching, you may have noticed that the series lacked something…an appearance by Pennywise himself! Bill Skarsgard will be back as the demonic clown, and he was certainly felt in spirit and imagery in the debut episode…but there was no true reveal up top.
So, why didn’t we see him?

“We did ‘less is more’ for half the show, but then we did ‘more is more.’ The idea behind the delayed appearance is the buildup of expectation. The audience doesn’t know that they want it, but I think it creates a very special feeling. When and where the clown is going to appear was a game that I wanted to play with the audience,” Andy told THR.
