Life & Style breaks down everything to know about the case and upcoming book.
What Did the Golden State Killer Do?
DeAngelo, who has been dubbed as the Golden State Killer, was behind serial rapes and murders that took place across California in the 1970s and 1980s. However, it took decades for the killer to be identified and ultimately convicted of the crimes.

ABC News reported that investigators identified DeAngelo as the suspect through genetic genealogy, which was able to link his DNA to the crime scenes.
The former police officer was arrested in 2018, and he pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder in 2020. During the August 2020 trial, DeAngelo was confronted in court by his rape survivors, their relatives and the family members of the victims he killed. Throughout the trial, several survivors emotionally opened up about their experiences as DeAngelo had to watch them testify.
DeAngelo was eventually sentenced to life in prison without parole on August 21, 2020.

What Is ‘The People vs The Golden State Killer’ About?
In The People vs The Golden State Killer, current District Attorney of Sacramento Ho recounts his experience of working as the lead prosecutor responsible for capturing and prosecuting DeAngelo.
“Ho’s book is the first official account of how the Golden State Killer was apprehended and put behind bars for life. Ho led an elite team of law enforcement from six California prosecutor’s offices, using a newly developed tool known as ‘investigative genetic genealogy’ to connect DeAngelo to multiple cold cases stretching back nearly a half century,” the book’s synopsis reads.

While past books about DeAnglo have largely focused on his terrifying crimes, Ho’s book shares “hundreds of facts and details never revealed to the public about the Golden State Killer’s crimes and it “presents the real-life story of the people who worked tirelessly to bring DeAngelo to justice.”
“It also offers the unprecedented authorized perspective of three survivors of DeAngelo’s crimes who courageously turned their pain into empowerment and activism,” the synopsis added. “A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated both by the author and Third State Books to Phyllis’s Garden, a nonprofit advocating for victims’ rights begun in honor of a GSK survivor.”
