Amanda Seyfried seems pretty confident that Mamma Mia 3 is happening, and she’s continuing to wish-cast the film with Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney.
Mamma Mia 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, though there is reportedly a script done for the third ABBA jukebox musical. Entertainment Tonight recently asked Seyfried about the status of the film, with their reporter noting that producer Rita Wilson had just said the film was “not off the table.”
Seyfried replied that not only was Mamma Mia 3 not off the table, it was actually “searing a hole inside the table, into the table.” The actress noted that maybe Wilson was “being coy,” before adding, “Or, maybe I’m just naive. But I’m pretty sure Mamma Mia 3 is a done deal.”
Speaking of what she’d like to see for her character Sophie in a potential third movie, Seyfried said, “I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids.”
Having said last month that she’d love to see Carpenter join the cast, Seyfried suggested the pop star could play “a cousin [Sophie] hasn’t seen in a while. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up,” she added of her recent co-star in The Housemaid. “There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be part of it, and I’m all for it.”
Seyfried went on to speculate — maybe half-jokingly, but also maybe kind of realistically — about a plot for the third film. “I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical.”
And most important, she concluded: “ABBA will be playing.”
Rumors of a third Mamma Mia have been circulating for years now. The first film (based on the hit stage musical of the same name) arrived in 2008, while the sequel-prequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, arrived in 2018.
