New York has never seemed so romantic. Since early July, Natalie Portman and Lena Dunham have been roaming its streets—under the gaze of photographers—for the filming of Good Sex, Dunham’s new comedy, due in theaters in 2027.
The creator of Girls directs Portman, playing its heroine, who also produces the film. Portman plays a forty-something couples therapist trying to navigate New York while caught in a love triangle. On one side is a sexy Brooklyn hipster; on the other, a Manhattan man with more classic charm. The pitch sounds a bit like Celine Song‘s comedy Materialists, starring Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson, which was released on July 2.
The film seems to have everything romanic comedy lovers adore: New York as a backdrop, a five-star cast, and an explosive female duo at the center. The rest of the cast is also exciting: Mark Ruffalo is on board, as is When Harry Met Sally star and rom-com icon Meg Ryan.
This collaboration between Dunham and Portman is no accident. Portman, known for her rigorous choice of roles, has long praised Dunham’s unique eye and her ability to dissect contemporary romance with a feminist sensibility all her own—as she brilliantly demonstrated on Girls. Portman has also said she was inspired by Dunham’s debut comedy, Tiny Furniture, released in 2010.
Though Good Sex is still in production, Dunham recently unveiled another romantic project: Too Much, her Netflix series following the amorous adventures of a New Yorker newly settled in London after a breakup.
