Sydney Sweeney may have been going through heartbreak behind the scenes, but you’d never know it on set.
The Euphoria star was in the middle of ending her seven-year relationship with fiancé Jonathan Davino in March when she began filming the upcoming movie The Housemaid. Director Paul Feig couldn’t help but praise Sydney’s professionalism, noting that she never let her personal life affect her performance.
“She was completely present emotionally,” Paul told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Aug. 20. “Just up for anything, and really didn’t bring any issues to set.”
Paul also admitted that he knew the actress was facing challenges off-camera. “And I know she was going through some things when this was going on—I mean, now everybody knows about her engagement falling apart and breaking off and all that,” he shared.
Even so, Sydney never let on. Paul recalled checking in with her as rumors swirled about her relationship. “I’d say, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ and she’d go, ‘I’m fine, I’m great!’ but not defensively.”
For Sydney, the set was exactly where she wanted to be. “Being on set is my happy place,” the 27-year-old actress told the outlet.
While she declined to discuss details of her former relationship—or whether she and Jonathan will continue working together through their production company, Fifty-Fifty Films—Sydney made it clear she’s focused on her career.
“It’s great to do what you love,” she gushed. “Because if you love it, then it doesn’t feel like work, and you want to do it every single day, all the time.”
She’s also prioritizing her personal growth since the split. “I’m learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends,” Sydney told The Sunday Times in May. “And I’m loving it.”
Of course, that hasn’t stopped speculation about her dating life. The actress was spotted jet skiing with a mystery man in July and hanging out with Machine Gun Kelly in May, though nothing has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Sydney has faced controversy in her professional life, too. She recently sparked backlash after starring in an American Eagle campaign that many critics slammed for evoking eugenics and “Nazi propaganda.” In one clip, Sydney explained how genes determine traits like hair and eye color before cheekily ending with, “My jeans are blue.”
After Doja Cat and Lizzo poked fun at the ad, American Eagle defended the star, saying, “We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
