Dwayne Johnson is sharing an “emotional” experience he had with his family while visiting Hawaii.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, the actor, 53, shared a video on Instagram of himself performing what he described as a “sacred” Samoan dance with his mother and daughters. The clip shows the family dancing along with a group on a stage, surrounded by palm trees.
As the dance got underway, Dwayne removed his shirt — prompting onlookers to cheer him on — and then began slapping the ground with his hands. In a lengthy caption, he explained the elements of the traditional dance.
“I was blessed to have this very special moment on stage with my mom, my daughters, and our aiga (family) — dancing our Samoan culture’s sacred dance, the Taualuga,” he wrote. “It’s custom for Samoan men to take their shirts off to proudly show our Polynesian tatau (tattoo) and the intricate stories our ink tells.”
He continued: “I’m slapping the ground as a way to show my respect for how significant this is and how SACRED our ground becomes in this moment with our elders (and my daughters dancing next to me).”
Dwayne described the dance as “emotional.”
“You can’t help but feel it. The mana,” he wrote, before reflecting on the “special” opportunity to honor his family’s culture.
“Life is busy for everyone – so special moments like this mean the world to me, to honor our family, our culture and always so good coming back home to Hawaii. Yesaah 🤙🏾,” he concluded.
Later, as he reacted to fans’ comments on the post, the Moana star — whose mother, Ata Johnson, is Samoan — shared his hope to visit Samoa with his family in the near future.
“I see some of your comments, yes I’m trying to bring the family to Samoa this year!” Dwayne wrote in response. “It’s all my two young daughters talk about, as they’ve never been to Samoa. Will be a beautiful homecoming, can’t wait. 🇼🇸 ❤️❤️.”
The actor is dad to three daughters: Simone, 24, whom he shares with ex-wife Dany Garcia, as well as Jasmine, 9, and Tiana, 6, whom he shares with wife Lauren Hashian.
