The comedian titled his note announcing the news, “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?”
Devon Walker revealed that he is leaving Saturday Night Live ahead of the show’s Season 51 premiere. Taking to social media on Monday, he wrote that “me and baby broke up” and compared “jobs in this industry” to “a bunch of little marriages.”
In an Instagram post, the comedian continued his marital analogy, “Some of em last for a long time if we’re lucky, but most of them are fleeting. Permanent until they’re not. That’s the deal. You know what it is it when you sign up.”
He mused, “Me and the show did three years together, and sometimes it was really cool. Sometimes it was toxic as hell. But we did what we made the most of what it was, even amidst all of the dysfunction. We made a fucked up lil family.”
He continued, “More than anything, I’m just really happy I got to do it with Gary and Alex. Niggas really went from running a bar show to working together at 30 rock! It’s a beautiful thing.” Before wrapping his post, Walker concluded: “Anyway, I’m bout to go to Japan. When I get back I’m tryna be in a prestige drama. Ideally something with Julianne Moore. Hope y’all staying hydrated and getting some money today.”
While it’s unclear if the actor is leaving the show by choice, he poked fun at the scenario and titled his note, “wait..did he quit or did he get fired?” In his Instagram announcement, he also included a screenshot of him texting “I’m out” alongside an emoji with a party hat, behind-the-scenes pics on the set of SNL, and an image of former president Joe Biden appearing to stumble when exiting a plane.
Walker’s news of his departure arrives after SNL creator Lorne Michaels’ recent interview with Puck, where Michaels hinted that fans can expect major changes leading up to the premiere of Season 51 on Oct. 4. “It’ll be announced in a week or so,” said Michael, noting that this upcoming season he feels “the pressure to reinvent.”
