Yes, yes, Anne Hathaway had a very Princess Diaries moment while filming The Devil Wears Prada 2.
By now you’ve likely seen photos and video of Hathaway’s heel snapping off, leading the 42-year-old actor to fall down a stoop in New York City on August 27. Luckily, she was quick to pop back up with a smile on her face, which meant fans were safe to share references to another famous tumble she took while filming The Princess Diaries in the year 2000.
Even Hathaway herself got nostalgic, sharing an edit of both falls on Instagram with the caption, “Twenty years later, still falling for you… 💕”
But not enough people are mentioning that Andy Sachs’ latest look was already a sartorial reference to The Princess Diaries. Aside from the studded—and apparently unstable—heels, Hathaway was dressed in a knee-length Fendi skirt with fluid pleating and gold hardware, which she paired with a sheer plaid top over a black bra. Of course, she finished off the look with Andy’s trusted Coach messenger bag.
You know who else wore knee-length pleated skirts and plaid?

Intentional or not, I will never look at Anne Hathaway in this combo without thinking of Mia Thermopolis, so there was absolutely no need for her to recreate the moment so viscerally! Although, now that I think about it, the skirt’s length and layers made it the best possible choice for a trip, as there was little risk of flashing the paparazzi…
Obviously, I’m kidding. I highly doubt Hathaway purposefully broke her heel—just like she didn’t intentionally fall on those bleachers during that painfully funny moment in The Princess Diaries. Just like this time, Hathaway remembers slipping, laughing, and keeping things moving after slipping on a puddle during the scene with Heather Matarazzo.
“Never thought about it again and all of a sudden, like six months later, it’s in the trailer,” she recalled while honoring late director Gary Marshall back in 2021. “He kept it! He kept it because it was a charming moment.”
Only time will tell if The Devil Wears Prada 2 director David Frankel will make the same call but either way, I want that skirt.
