Benito Skinner‘s Overcompensating is coming back for another round on Amazon Prime Video.
The comedian and show creator, who stars as Benny in the show, announced the news on social media Wednesday. “WE’RE OFFICIALLY GOING BACK 2 SCHOOL,” Skinner wrote in an Instagram post alongside a series of photos and clips, including behind-the-scenes takes. “Thank you so much for all your insane love for this show. And thank you for being so patient while Daddy’s been cooking season 2. One guy at Hudson News told me he’s watched it 7 times… that’s mental illness my love.”
The raucously sweet comedy chronicles the life of Benny, a closeted former football player and golden boy of his Idaho town, who quickly becomes friends with Carmen (Wally Baram) as they navigate love, betrayal, and friendship at the fictional Yates College. Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco, Rish Shah, Holmes, Corteon Moore, Owen Thiele, and Nell Verlaque also star in the Prime Video series.
Charli XCX, who is Overcompensating’s executive music producer, also made a special guest appearance in the initial run.
A Rolling Stone review by Alan Sepinwall found that the eight-episode first season was “often at its best when it leans into its most sincere, even soapy side, and looks at how Benny isn’t the only one at school trying to act like someone he’s not.”
“We look forward to our global Prime Video customers enjoying more of Benito’s captivating and bold storytelling in the second season of Overcompensating,” said Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios’ Global Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, said in statement. “Working alongside the talented teams from A24 and Strong Baby has been a joy for everyone involved, and we are excited to see what hilarious moments Benito has planned for season two.”
Along with Skinner, showrunner Scott King; Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin for Strong Baby; Josh Bachove; Daniel Gray Longino; and Charli also serve as executive producers for Overcompensating.
