It’s time to celebrate — a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book is on the way!
PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at Partypooper, the latest installment of author and illustrator Jeff Kinney’s smash hit series, out this fall from Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams.
Middle schooler Greg Heffley returns as he tries to plan a birthday party for himself. But Greg’s planning soon spins out of control when his guest list becomes bigger than he expected, the decorations are in disarray and one of the party’s surprises backfires.
Per publisher Abrams, the book is “packed with cake disasters, family fiascos and classic Wimpy Kid humor.”
Partypooper marks the 20th book in Kinney’s beloved series, which, by the time of its publication date, will have over 300 million copies in print. The books were also made into a series of live action films; Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, the series’ latest animated film, is currently in the works at Disney +.

In honor of the milestone book, Kinney will also embark on a cross-country book tour with stops in:
- Wrentham, Mass. on Oct. 19
- Baltimore, Md. on Oct. 20
- Manassas, Va. on Oct. 21
- Richmond, Va. on Oct. 22
- Winston-Salem, N.C. on Oct. 23
- Decatur, Ga. on Oct. 24
- Birmingham, Ala. on Oct. 25
- Jackson, Miss. on Oct. 26
- Memphis, Tenn. on Oct. 27
- Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 28
Looking back on the popularity of the series, Kinney previously told PEOPLE that he realized Diary of a Wimpy Kid was a true success when he arrived at a Long Island Barnes & Noble for a book signing and saw how many people had shown up.
“I think there must have been 2,000 people at the Barnes & Noble and it was just absolutely overwhelming,” the author explained. “My editor and I looked at each other and we knew that things had changed.”
Kinney also noted how much it means to him to still see a strong readership for the series, which debuted in 2007.
“It is really meaningful to me that people in their 20s and a little bit younger still have a place in their hearts for my books,” Kinney continued.
