The BBC crime dramedy Ludwig, Australia’s hit kids animated series Bluey and Netflix’s biopic Amar Singh Chamkila were among the titles that scored nominations for the 53rd International Emmy Awards, unveiled on Thursday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
A total of 64 nominees span 16 categories and represent a record 26 countries. Winners will be announced on Nov. 24 at a ceremony in New York City. The UK led the field with 12 nominations, followed by Brazil with eight and South Africa with four.
“As the International Emmys continue to recognize the very best in television, the creativity and caliber of this year’s nominees, from a record 26 countries, reflect the global strength of our industry,” said International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. Paisner.
In the drama series competition, Mexico’s AppleTV+ series Las Azules [Women in Blue], the story of trailblazing female police officers in 1970s Mexico City, goes up against Israel’s Bad Boy, a semi-autobiographical story of a teenager navigating the juvenile detention system; South African suburban satire/crime drama Koek [Cake]; and British series Rivals, an adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s novel of 1980s media and political rivalries.
Brit star David Mitchell picked up a best actor nomination for his turn as a socially awkward puzzle-maker who impersonates his missing detective twin brother, in BBC hit Ludwig, with the show also scoring a best comedy nom. From Mexico, Y Llegaron de Noche [They Came at Night], a period comedy set on the Spanish-language set of Universal’s 1931 Drácula, was also nominated, alongside Netflix’s surreal South Korean series Chicken Nugget, about a young woman who is transformed into fried chicken, and France’s school-set sitcom Iris.
Performance nods reflect the breadth of the international slate. Diljit Dosanjh is nominated for Amar Singh Chamkila, portraying the rise and assassination of the Punjabi folk icon. Oriol Pla is up for his turn playing a young addict in the Spanish drama Yo, adicto [I, Addict], alongside Diego Vasquez for his portrayal of patriarch José Arcadio Buendía in the Colombian Netflix adaptation of literary classic One Hundred Years of Solitude.
On the actress side, Charlotte Hope was nominated for her portrayal of pioneering profiler Micki Pistorius in South Africa’s Catch Me a Killer; Anna Maxwell Martin for playing Delia Balmer in ITV’s Until I Kill You a woman whose partner turned out to be a serial killer; Carolina Miranda for a woman struggling with addition in Mexican drama Mujeres Asesinas; and Maria Sid for her portrayal as a producer of a controversial prison theater project in Sweden’s series Smärtpunkten [Pressure Point].
All nominees will convene in New York from Nov. 21-23 for the International Emmy World Television Festival ahead of the awards gala.
