SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle,” currently playing in theaters.
The Infinity Castle trilogy has begun.
This weekend, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment‘s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle,” drops into movie theaters. It is the first film in a planned three-part cinematic finale for the global anime hit.
Based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotoge, the film adapts the climactic Infinity Castle arc, picking up where the “Hashira Training” arc left off. After Muzan Kibutsuji launches a surprise attack, Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps are pulled into the demons’ stronghold.
“Infinity Castle” does not disappoint. The film takes place inside the realm that shelters the demon king, Muzan Kibutsuji. Muzan’s soldiers are his Upper Ranks, who battle the demon slayers in the ever-shifting structure of the castle in epic battles. Each battle is personal. The first is between Shinobu, a poison expert who takes on Doma, a demon with fan-weilding powers. As their face-off unfolds, it’s revealed that Doma killed Shinobu’s sister.
In another realm, Zenitsu takes on Kaigaku, a former disciple-turned-demon. Both trained under Hashira, and as the two duel, flashbacks reveal it was Kaigaku who killed their former master.
Meet some of the demon slayers below.
Tanjiro – Demon Slayer
Tanjiro Kamado joined the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization dedicated to hunting down demons, after his younger sister, Nezuko, was turned into a demon.
He swore to defeat the demon king, Muzan Kibutsuji.
This time, Tanjiro partners with Water Breathing ally Giyu to take on the mighty blue-skinned Akaza. Akaza is an Upper Rank Three demon. “Infinity Castle” Tanjiro (accompanied by Giyu) comes up against Akaza. A flashback helps Tanjiro unlock new powers. He remembers a conversation with his father about the transparent world – a skill that allows them to see inside their opponent’s body and see their flowing blood and how their muscles are contracting. This technique of perception helps during battle and allows them to see the inner workings of their opponent, thus helping them overcome it.
Tanjiro’s flashback essentially gives him the upper hand in battling Akaza and gives him a new ability in avoiding the demon’s moves.
Nekuzo – Demon Slayer
Tanjiro’s youngest sister has been turned into a demon, but thanks to Sakonji Urokodaki, and her willpower, she is able to fight and protect humans. The Demon Corps carries her in a box and realizes she is immune to sunlight, and that’s where she operates the best – in daytime.
While she’s not a key character in “Infinity Castle,” she is the reason why Tanjiro fights in the first place and is his emotional driving force.
Giyu – Demon Slayer
Giyu Tomioka’s ability is water breathing techniques which he uses in various ways.
He protects and cares for those he’s close to, and puts his life on the line for Tanjiro. He is a member of the Demon Slayer Corps highest ranking swordsmen, the Hashira. He once believed he was not worthy of being a Hashira. But he remembers his friend, Sabito, who instilled hope in him, and Giyu is determined to carry it through.
His powers, when activated, make him strong as he uses “Water Surface Slash or “Drop Ripple Thrust,” all of which come in handy when he’s alongside Tanjiro, fighting Upper Rank Three demon Akaza.
Zenitsu – Demon Slayer
Zenitsu Agatsuma is a demon slayer in the Demon Slayer Corps. His technique is Thunder Breathing, but it has given him the power to overcome demons with his sword.
“Infinity Castle” sees him come face-to-face with Kaigaku, a former Demon Slayer who was once his senior. Kaigaku is now a demon in Upper Rank Six. The two battle it out in “Infinity Castle,” and Zenitsu has to use his technique to overcome and destroy his most personal opponent to date.
Shinobu – Demon Slayer
Insect and sword-wielding poison expert Hashira Shinobu faces off against Upper Moon 2, Doma.
Her unique abilities allow her to wield demon-slaying powers like a bee sting or even a dragonfly attack style. She also is a high ranking demon slayer with deep knowledge of medicine. With eyes like a fly, and her speed, she uses insect breathing and her medical knowledge to battle Doma. Her mission is a personal one; Doma killed her sister.
Kanao – Demon Slayer
Kanao’s past childhood trauma is that of human neglect. As a young child, she was sold off to a man. But she’s rescued by Shinobu. Shinobu, along with Kanae Kocho, helps train her and find her strength.
As a demon slayer, she possesses exceptional agility.
When “Infinity Castle” ends, Kanao emerges and is ready to face Doma. Thus setting the scene for a battle in the film’s sequel.
Insouke – Demon Slayer
Inosuke is a demon slayer who wears a hollowed out boar’s head as a mask.
He travels with his peer Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado and Zenitsu Agatsuma. Raised in the mountains, Inosuke has razor-sharp intuition. Inosuke makes an appearance near the end of “Infinity Castle,” killing the less powerful demons. However, he’s enraged at Doma because the demon killed his mother, Kotoha.
Genya – Demon Slayer
A swordsman in the Demon Slayer Corps, Genya is one of Tanjiro’s peers. By eating a demon, he has the special ability to temporarily take on the constitution of a demon. He is Sanemi’s younger brother.
Genya doesn’t have a breathing style, but his strength gives him the ability to eat and consume demons.
Sanemi – Demon Slayer
Sanemi displays more hostility to demons than his fellow demon slayers.
Sanemi belongs to the Wind Hashira and uses wind breathing techniques when fighting demons. He also has a rare blood type that makes him appealing to demons. That scent of Marechi Blood is strong enough to throw demons off, and they lose focus.
