Takashi Murakami is once again lending his signature floral designs to the Los Angeles Dodgers, following the team’s historic World Series win in an all-time fall classic that stretched into November. Murakami previously designed jerseys and merch for both the Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs when the two teams faced off at the Tokyo Series in February, and Murakami’s floral jerseys have been a staple among fans at Dodger Stadium this year.
The new collection, announced earlier this week and available today, features t-shirts and hoodies in white, black, and of course, Dodger Blue. The merch is available at Complex, Fanatics, and the MLB Shop.
The shirts feature the Dodgers’ script logo, surrounded by Murakami’s floral designs on the back, with floral “LA” and World Series logos on the chest. The hoodies, meanwhile, also feature “Dodgers” written out in Japanese Katakana on the sleeve.
In a statement announcing the release, Murakami said, “It was a thrilling, nerve-racking, and deeply moving moment that truly captured the beauty of the sport. I was in front of my TV, shouting at the top of my lungs in excitement. And yes, I cried! It has been such an honor to be able to collaborate with the team, together with Complex and Fanatics, throughout this championship MLB season.”
The collaboration with the celebrated Japanese artist is a natural fit, given the Dodgers’ well-established fandom among Japanese and Japanese-American fans thanks to superstars like Shohei Ohtani, Rōki Sasaki, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The latter cemented his status in baseball history with an all-time pitching performance in games six and seven of the World Series, throwing 96 pitches in Game 6, followed by 34 pitches in Game 7, earning him the MVP title.
Murakami’s collection comes as rumors bubble around a different Murakami and the Dodgers. Today, it was announced that Munetaka Murakami, who plays for the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball, will make the leap to the MLB. That’s led to speculation about him possibly suiting up in Dodger Blue as the team pushes for the first three-peat since the Yankees in 2000.
