What Is Sled Hockey?
As its name suggests, sled hockey is played by athletes seated in a sled that is positioned on top of two thin hockey blades. Just let regular hockey, players use their sticks to pass and shoot a puck into the opposing team’s net. Unlike regular hockey, the para hockey sticks have tiny metal “grips” on the bottom that players can use to move themselves — and their sleds — around the ice.
Developed for athletes with physical disabilities that prevent them from standing or skating, sled hockey is also known as “sledge hockey” or “para ice hockey.”
Sled hockey was first introduced to the Paralympics in 1994. The U.S. have won the last four para hockey titles and will be looking to extend that record achievement to five straight gold medals.
