Ariana Grande has released the video for her latest single “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” a horror-inspired visual co-starring actor Justin Long.
The video was directed by Christian Breslauer, who shot last year’s short film “Brighter Days Ahead,” from the singer’s 2024 album Eternal Sunshine.
Spielberg’s go-to cinematographer, Janusz Kamiński, shot the video. The video opens with Long burying Grande in an underground bunker filled with stacks of black-and-white composition notebooks marked with her “insecurities.”
“Hate That I Made You Love Me” kicked off her new era in anticipation of “Petal,” her eight studio album. The project, releasing on July 31 via Republic Records, was executive-produced and co-written by Grande and Ilya, who had worked with her as far back as “Dangerous Woman” and most recently on her 2024 album “Eternal Sunshine.”
Grande announced “Petal” in late April, stating that the album is “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.” Some have already interpreted “Hate That I Made You Love Me” as a breakup song, or even a message to the public about its perception of her.
The singer is currently gearing up for the launch of her “Eternal Sunshine” tour, kicking off on June 6 at Oakland’s Oakland Arena. The trek was initially pegged to her 2024 album and its deluxe edition, “Brighter Days Ahead,” though it’s likely she’ll incorporate new music from the “Petal” era.
It also may be one of the last tours she’ll be staging for the foreseeable future, as she recently said on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast that “I don’t want to say anything definitive… I do know that I’m very excited to do this small tour, but I think it might not happen again for a long, long, long, long, long time.”
