- A newlywed was “berated” for rewearing her wedding saree to her cousin’s wedding.
- The disapproval came as a shock, given that the bride had given the woman express permission beforehand.
- The family drama escalated further when the bride got into an argument with her husband and lit his house on fire.
It’s no secret that wedding dress codes vary based on cultural norms and traditions. In a Tamil wedding, for example, the bride is presented with two sarees: one from the groom’s family, and one from her own family. One Reddit user who recently tied the knot explained that following one’s own wedding, it is customary to then rewear the latter saree to the next wedding she attends—and that’s exactly what the writer did when her cousin got hitched.
Moments after arriving at her cousin’s wedding, however, “all hell broke loose.”

“The bride’s mother, mother-in-law and her sister, pulled me inside a room and began berating me,” the newlywed wrote. “Before I could say anything, the bride burst in and started berating me too. WTF.”
The writer had good reason to be surprised: not only did her cousin know about the tradition, but she also gave her permission to rewear the outfit several times prior to the big day. “She happily agreed to me wearing my saree,” the user wrote. “I was elated. Even if she had said no, I would’ve accepted the answer. I wouldn’t have worn the saree if she didn’t agree to it.”

After facing the outrage of multiple family members at the wedding, the writer decided to leave. She was then escorted out of the venue by three security guards. “Saying that I was humiliated would be an understatement,” she recalled.
The bride and her family turned against the writer in the aftermath of their fight, going so far as to call her a “narcissistic bitch” in phone calls and emails. One Reddit user summed up the interaction thusly: “Your cousin set you up. I’m so sorry for you.” Things didn’t end there, however. The groom eventually defended the writer, and the couple had a fight which ended with a shocking admission: the cousin was “cheating on him.”
“Not with one but two other people, both are her exes,” the writer added in an update.

Following the argument with her husband, the cousin went to his shared home and “LIT IT ON FIRE.” According to the writer, she was later taken to jail on charges of arson. But did the writer feel vindicated? Not quite.
“Everyone knows, and I feel, avenged? Idk, I feel horrible that her poor husband had to go through all that, but sooner’s better than later,” she wrote. “It’s about time poeple [sic] found out what the person actually is like.”
